Safe Listening Education Needs to be a Major Health Priority, Parents Say

Safe Listening Education Needs to be a Major Health Priority, Parents Say

Rockville, MD (PRWEB) May 03, 2012

Seventy-five percent of parents say teaching children how to use personal audio technology safely should be a major health priority, according to results of a new online poll commissioned by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA).

One thousand parents with children age 18 and under at home took the poll this past March. It defined “personal audio technology” as devices where headphones or ear buds are used (iPods, other MP3 players, cell phones, computers, and the like). Crux Research created the poll content in consultation with ASHA, while the survey firm Toluna fielded the poll.

Complete poll results are available at http://www.listentoyourbuds.org/ASHA-Poll/.

The parental call to make safe listening education a major health priority apparently stems from other poll findings like these:

42% of all parents polled feel their children use personal audio technology at volume levels that could potentially harm their hearing; the same worry is shared by more than half of the parents of boys ages 13-18 and nearly of half of the parents of girls the same ages.

43% of parents of boys ages 13-18 and 42% of parents of girls the same ages say their children use personal audio technology more often than they like.

84% of all parents polled say they are concerned that misuse of personal audio technology is damaging the hearing of children in general; within that group of parents, nearly 50% say they are extremely or very concerned; meanwhile, for the same reason, more than half of all minority parents polled say they are extremely or very concerned for the hearing of their children (this finding is most pronounced among Hispanic parents, 63%; African American are next, 50%).

On average, parents think children should be about age 11 before they have unsupervised use of personal audio technology.

“We have long been aware of the potential for noise-induced hearing loss caused by the use of excessive volume and frequent and prolonged listening time,” ASHA President Shelly Chabon, PhD, CCC-SLP says. “However, there is a dearth of documentation focused on moms’ and dads’ opinions about poor listening habits. Our poll indicates clearly that parents are not only concerned but, further, believe safe listening should be a major health education priority.”

The poll results are being released on the eve of safe-listening concerts that will be held at P.S. 003 Charrette Elementary in New York City on Friday, May 4, as part of the outreach of ASHA’s Listen To Your Buds campaign (http://www.listentoyourbuds.org).

An original leader raising the importance of using personal audio technology safely to ensure hearing protection, ASHA has brought its Buds campaign to schools coast-to-coast. Buds concerts feature musicians who employ entertaining and engaging ways to deliver simple, but important, hearing health messages like “keep the volume down.”

Bongiovi Acoustics, a cutting edge audio company dedicated to the hearing health of the young, is the newest sponsor of the Listen To Your Buds campaign. Other sponsors include Califone International, Consumer Electronics Association, Educational Audiology Association, Music Teachers National Association, National Association for Music Education, National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts, National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders, Parents’ Choice Foundation, Recording Industry Association of America, and Tune-A-Fish Records.

In addition, more than a dozen members of Congress, Democrats and Republicans, serve as honorary campaign co-chairs.

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 2 May 2012

SAGE, the world’s leading independent academic and professional publisher, today announced the launch of a new podcast: Social Science Bites, a series of interviews with leading social scientists on different aspects of the social world.

The series is produced and presented by well known authors Nigel Warburton (Senior Lecturer in Philosophy, The Open University) and David Edmonds (Senior Research Associate at the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics) following the enormous success of their existing podcast series, Philosophy Bites, which has had more than 13 million downloads.

“We’ve been stunned by the success of Philosophy Bites which is listened to around the globe,” said Nigel Warburton. “Short podcast interviews provide an excellent vehicle for communicating ideas in an accessible, direct, and interesting way. We’re delighted that SAGE has encouraged us to turn our attention to the Social Sciences.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to engage with some of the most important issues of our day with leading thinkers and researchers. We’ve already recorded interviews on topics as diverse as the nature of the social sciences, equality, co-operation, children and the Internet, and the spirit of cities, and have many more interviews planned with top social scientists on a very broad range of topics.”

The series is launching with three episodes: Danny Dorling on Inequality; Rom Harré on the Nature of the Social Sciences; and Richard Sennett on Co-operation. These will be available with transcripts from http://www.socialsciencebites.com (hosted on the international blog network http://www.socialsciencespace.com). Future episodes, released monthly, will include interviews with Sonia Livingstone, Angela McRobbie, Stephen Pinker, Steven Kosslyn, Stephen Reicher, and Avner de-Shalit.

“SAGE has long championed the value of the social sciences in shaping our understanding of society and culture,” said Ziyad Marar, Global Publishing Director, SAGE. “As a true addict of Philosophy Bites I have long admired the creative energy and unobtrusive skill that Nigel and Dave have brought to each podcast. I’m thrilled to see them bring the same blend of intellectual enthusiasm and know how to Social Science Bites, and expect there will be wide interest among academics, media, policy makers and the general public.”

To listen to the first episodes of the podcast and download transcripts visit http://www.socialsciencebites.com.

Notes to Editors:

Launch: Members of the press are invited to register for a free ticket to a launch reception where editors Nigel Warburton and David Edmonds will introduce this new series: 10th May, 6:30 – 9:30pm at The Institute of Contemporary Arts, 12 Carlton House Terrace, London SW1Y 5AH. Places are limited so please RSVP. Contact: mithu.lucraft@sagepub.co.uk

Initial podcast summaries:

Danny Dorling: Current inequality in the rich world is at the highest it has been since the 1920s. Hear Danny Dorling discussing the “staggering” disparity between rich and poor which has become a defining measure of our times. How did it happen? Why does it matter? And is it sustainable?

Rom Harré: “Everybody lives in a society…They want to know what it is they’re living in,” says Rom Harré in this exploration of the nature of the social sciences. How do they differ from the physical sciences? What challenges do they face? What is their value?

Richard Sennett: Co-operation is working with people to do things you can’t do yourself. How can you co-operate with people who don’t share your values? According to Richard Sennett, such co-operation is a craft that needs to be learnt.

Adolescent Development Journal Offers New Article Packs on Issues of Concern to Professionals Who Work With Youth

Eugene, OR (PRWEB) April 30, 2012

The Prevention Researcher, has introduced four new collections of articles which focused on topics of concern to professionals who work with youth. The article packs provide resources on the topics of school connectedness and completion, strategies for working with parents and caregivers, teens and drugs: prevention approaches, and adolescent self-injury.

“We’re pleased to offer these new collections of articles that provide information on today’s best practices for working with young people,” said Steven Ungerleider, PhD., founding editor of The Prevention Researcher. “Professionals in schools and a variety of other organizations can select the article packs covering specific topics of interest to keep up-to-date on relevant, practical research and programs that they can put to work with youth.”

School Connectedness and Completion is a collection of 13 articles that revolve around a model of school success which includes the synergistic roles of neighborhoods, schools, families, and peers. It includes a number of articles about school-based approaches to preventing school dropout and promoting school connectedness, which are complemented by articles on peer acceptance, afterschool programs, community systems, and adults in all environments. The price of the article pack is $ 45.

Strategies for Working with Parents and Caregivers is a collection of 14 articles covering a wide variety of issues which youth and families may be experiencing…. from improving teen self-esteem, to helping parents talk with their children about drug use, to the special needs of grandparent-headed households. The unifying factor is that they all include strategies for working directly with parents. The price of the article pack is $ 50.

Teens and Drugs: School and Community Approaches to Prevention is a collection of eight articles examining adolescent drug use from the perspective of school and community prevention. It covers such important topics as preventing prescription drug use, examining how drugs affect adolescent brain development (and how this might impact our prevention and intervention approaches), as well as addresses the special needs of youth who have substance-abusing parents. The price of the article pack is $ 25.

The Self-Injury article pack provides three articles on a topic that “remains one of the most difficult behaviors to encounter, with few professionals feeling well equipped to handle these situations,” according to Dr. Lloyd-Richardson. It includes Dr. Lloyd-Richardson’s article, “Non-Suicidal Self-Injury in Adolescents,” which serves as a foundation by defining terms and exploring motivations for engaging in self-injury. The other two articles explore the differences between self-injury and suicide attempts, and provide guidelines for school-based professionals who work with youth that self-injure. The price of the article pack is $ 10.

All four of the article packs are available by digital delivery only and can be ordered online from The Prevention Researcher at http://www.tpronline.org.

Norwalk, CT (PRWEB) April 10, 2012

HealthPrize Technologies, LLC, a leading innovator in medication adherence solutions, announced today it has brought on three new hires to serve in strategic, principal roles at the growing technology company. And, to accommodate the rapid growth, HealthPrize recently moved to a new office space located along the waterfront in the heart of downtown South Norwalk, Conn.

This development comes on the heels of a late-March announcement highlighting a $ 2 million investment HealthPrize received in equity financing.

Adding to the experience and expertise of the HealthPrize founding team, the new hires include:

Kate McGreevy, Director of Content Development. A seasoned medical writer and editor for multiple healthcare-related organizations, Kate is responsible for the development of HealthPrize’s medical education program content as well as expansion of the program development team.
Julie Tai, Director of Client Services. With extensive experience managing client services for the leading online physician network, Sermo, as well as managing various product channels for Johnson & Johnson, Julie is well-positioned to lead HealthPrize program implementations and customer account management and will help build and lead the account management team.
Inna Yavorsky, Product Manager. A pharmacist by training, Inna’s more than eight years in pharmaceutical marketing was most recently spent as a product manager for Wolters Kluwer where she managed WK flagship platforms. At HealthPrize, Inna will be responsible for the development and marketing of HealthPrize’s proprietary Refill Verification and Eligibility Verification Systems, in addition to future product features.

“In the past year we’ve been fortunate to acheive some major milestones at HealthPrize, including new partnerships, positive pilot studies and a recent $ 2 million round of funding,” said Tom Kottler, CEO and co-founder, HealthPrize. “With the addition of these new team members, and the projects and developments we have currently in the pipeline, we look forward to continuing the momentum and achieving success that will help further define our position as a leader and innovator in the medication adherence space.”

Launched in 2009, HealthPrize drives measurable medication adherence through rewards, fun and education, using gaming dynamics and behavioral economics. HealthPrize’s web-based software solution and mobile app are built on the idea that medication non-adherence is largely due to a lack of value placed on the medication by patients. The goal of HealthPrize is to add value to the medication in the eyes of the patient.

HealthPrize is rolling out large-scale commercial pilot programs in 2012 that target a diverse array of conditions, from acne to oncology. These programs will enroll tens of thousands of patients and provide data on patient engagement, education, and increased adherence.

SunGard Enhances Customer Experience with Latest Releases of AvantGard Integrity and Quantum Treasury Solutions

New York, NY (PRWEB) February 27, 2012

The latest releases of SunGard’s AvantGard Integrity and AvantGard Quantum treasury solutions provide enhanced usability and functionality to help customers gain increased visibility to cash and risk across the enterprise. SunGard’s AvantGard Treasury suite offers a broad spectrum of solutions from basic cash management to sophisticated risk analysis.

The new release of AvantGard Integrity is available in two editions: the Xpress Edition (XE) addresses basic treasury requirements while the Corporate Edition (CE) includes more sophisticated cash and treasury management functionality. The new Integrity releases offer treasurers interactive dashboards and a new, highly configurable reporting tool to help enable easy extraction of data into user defined views including cash positions, balances, foreign exchange positions, rates, intercompany positions, and more. The new interface also helps the treasurer on the go by delivering easy to use interfaces for popular mobile devices such as Apple iPhone, iPad and Android.

For more complex corporate treasuries, the new version of AvantGard Quantum offers sophisticated risk analysis capabilities and is available as the Enterprise Edition (EE). Corporate treasurers will be able to create personal workspaces that help them establish specific analytics and frequently used models for multi-national scenarios and global financial risk analysis. Configurable dashboards and upgraded reporting functionality are among the many new features included to enhance the user experience.

“In recent years, many corporations have focused on centralizing and standardizing their finance systems and operations, often as part of an ERP initiative,” according to Nigel Rayner, research vice president at Gartner. “These organizations are now turning the same lens on their treasury operations, looking for ways to improve the effectiveness of those operations through the centralization and standardization of treasury systems and processes. Corporate treasury applications are the technology foundation that can support centralized treasury operations.”

Recent awards demonstrate the continued leadership of AvantGard Treasury. Global Finance magazine named SunGard the “Best Treasury Workstation Provider” for AvantGard in its 2012 rankings of Treasury and Cash Management Banks and Providers; the eighth consecutive year that SunGard AvantGard has earned this distinction. In addition, Financial-i magazine recently named SunGard’s AvantGard the 2011 “Leader in Innovation” in the Treasury Management Software category due to the solution’s eBAM capabilities, connectivity, widespread adoption, and private cloud deployment option.

AvantGard Integrity and AvantGard Quantum both offer the benefit of managed bank and SWIFT connectivity through a unified platform with value-added services such as eBAM for electronic bank account management. These solutions can be deployed on premise, in a private cloud hosted environment, or as a SaaS* model. The new versions are now available to new and existing customers.

Nike US Sports Camps Coach Offers Hitting Tip for 2012 Summer Softball Camp Attendees

Nike US Sports Camps Coach Offers Hitting Tip for 2012 Summer Softball Camp Attendees

Coach Jodie Holava

San Rafael, CA (PRWEB) February 18, 2012

US Sports Camps Coach and Defiance College’s head coach Jodie Holava offers her expertise on the fundamentals of hitting and provides a suggestion to youth softball players that their swing should begin with a “negative movement.”

“In summer softball camp we train our players that as a hitter prepares to hit a softball, they need to establish a trigger as a timing mechanism as well as a preparatory movement to drive the ball. This begins with what most hitting coaches refer to as the ‘negative move’ or ‘load,’” Holava states. “During the negative move the hitter begins to shift her body weight in to the back leg as well as separate her hands from her starting position to a load position towards her back shoulder. When loading your hands, it’s important to move your hands back on the same plane to get into this strong attacking position. We want to limit any up or down movement to give us the best opportunity to hit the ball squarely.”

Holava believes that each hitter can get to this position in their own way, but getting there is a key element to hitting with ultimate power. “Like the stance, hitters can have their own special flair to getting into this position. However, it’s important that all great hitters reach this strong position in time to drive the ball. You need this load in order to gain momentum and power to drive the pitch. It’s very difficult to do that if you tried to start your swing from a stationary position. Think about trying to throw a softball right from your shoulder, without any windup it’s very tough to get any velocity on the ball. Same with the swing, it’s very tough to get any bat speed! Happy Hitting!”

After just six seasons as the head coach of the Defiance College softball program, Jodie Holava is nearing the most wins in school history with a 144-108 overall record. Holava’s .571 winning percentage is the best by any coach in program history. To get more tips and instruction from her check out her Nike Softball Camp at Defiance College.

Davenport Institute Report Indicates California Is Facing ?Golden Opportunity? To Rethink Citizen Engagement In Local Government

Davenport Institute Report Indicates California Is Facing “Golden Opportunity” To Rethink Citizen Engagement In Local Government

Malibu, California (PRWEB) October 28, 2011

A report just issued by Pepperdine University’s Davenport Institute for Public Engagement and Civic Leadership finds that California’s tough economy is causing cities, towns and counties across the state to rethink how they tackle some of their toughest challenges. A new collaborative approach to governance, it notes, is key.

The report, “Golden Governance: Building Effective Public Engagement in California,” came about from collaboration among the Davenport Institute, the National Conference on Citizenship (NCoC), California Forward and the Center for Individual and Institutional Renewal. It is available for download at http://www.goldengovernance.org.

Seven California communities are cited in the report as having reacted to the current financial situation by rethinking the role of citizen engagement in governance. The report also pointed out that local leaders are learning that they need to fundamentally change their approach to governance to meet the expectations and demands of an increasingly informed citizenry. As a result, the state of California is becoming a hotbed for innovative approaches that establish productive relationships between government and citizens that, in turn, can provide solutions for meeting the financial and service needs of their community.

“This new kind of leadership produces better, more creative policy solutions and better, more engaged citizens committed to the hard work of self-governance,” said Pete Peterson, Executive Director of the Davenport Institute. “In an era of tight budgets, public engagement has moved beyond ‘good government’ to necessary governance,” Peterson added.

Among the six projects highlighted in the report is a $ 72 million water treatment project in Redwood City that met with citizen resistance. City Manager Ed Everett invited citizens to develop alternatives for meeting water conservation goals that stayed within the city’s timeframe and budget. Their solution – to replace public grass fields with artificial turf – was one that City Hall had never even considered. Yet, it accomplished the project goals with less controversy.

“Redwood City is just one example of how citizens and government officials can come together to identify innovate policy solutions,” said Peterson. “Local government officials simply need to be prepared to enter into collaborative governance with an open mind and not a predisposed outcome.”

In addition to specific examples of projects from around California, the report features a series of hard-learned lessons aimed at informing civic leaders, elected officials and citizens on how to best pursue collaborative governance. Ongoing engagement, it notes, is critical and often determines the success or failure of a collaborative approach to governance. To this end, the report includes a list of online resources to help foster increased and sustained community participation.

“Technology certainly plays a role in the trend toward collaborative governance,” noted David B. Smith, Executive Director of the National Conference on Citizenship. “Online engagement, social media and mobile applications all work to foster increased engagement, but there is a human element. as well. Public officials need to be prepared to meet the expectations of informed and engaged citizens and invest the time required to involve people in the process.”

In addition to the report, sponsoring organizations also unveiled a new Web site – http://www.goldengovernance.org – that will serve as an ongoing resource for communities and citizens to investigate new approaches to innovative governance. Elected officials, community members, and civic leaders are invited to join in the conversation and share their own stories of success on the GoldenGovernance.org blog.

About the Davenport Institute for Public Engagement at Pepperdine University

Since its founding as a multi-partisan and non-profit organization in 2005, The Davenport Institute (formerly Common Sense California) has worked to engage the citizens of California in the policy decisions that affect people’s everyday lives. The Institute believes that, in today’s world of easy access to information and easy connectivity to others, California’s municipal and civic leaders must seek ways to involve the residents of their communities in the important issues they confront. Done legitimately, this new kind of leadership produces better, more creative policy solutions and better, more engaged citizens committed to the hard work of self-governance.
